The Moonlighters of Glenbeigh

The Land War (Irish: Cogadh na Talún) in Irish history was a period of agrarian agitation in rural Ireland in the 1870s, 1880s, and 1890s. The agitation was led by the Irish National Land League and was dedicated to bettering the position of tenant farmers and ultimately to a redistribution of land to tenants from landlords, especially absentee landlords. While there were many violent incidents and some deaths in this campaign, it was not actually a "war", but rather a prolonged period of civil unrest.

As the evening sun was setting by Rossbeigh’s lovely shore

All things were quiet and silent except the billows roar

Some manly hearts were throbbing, their joy and bosom filled

They were told by Captain Moonlight that night they should be drilled

Some twenty men got ready and we got a few men more

As the moon shone bright and clear we marched by forty four

If you had to see those forty four they would fill your heart with pride

As they marched from Glenbeigh to Glencar and back again that night
