The Man from Cahersiveen

This song was composed by Tralee singer and historian Peter Locke. The song celebrates Kerry’s defeat of Galway in the 2000 All-Ireland Final. The final scores were Kerry 0-17 to Galway 1-10. Maurice Fitzgerald replaced Noel Kennelly in the 27th minute and played as a third midfielder.

Whilst we honour in song and in story,

The men of the great Kerry games,

There’s a name that will live forever,

His talents and skills were supreme.

He hailed from the South West of Ireland,

His likes will never be seen,

His name is Maurice Fitzgerald,

The man from Cahersiveen.

Chorus

So here’s to the boys of the Kingdom,

Who feared not Galway supreme,

They’ll never forget our master,

The man from Cahersiveen.

September two thousand in Croke Park,

Our boys lined out ‘gainst Galway,

The game it slipped from Kerry,

And Galway were having their say.

Then Maurice Fitzgerald was called upon,

and with a kick from the sideline supreme,

Kerry were All-Ireland champions,

Thanks to Maurice Fitzgerald from Cahersiveen.

Chorus

So here’s to the boys of the Kingdom,

Who feared not Galway supreme,

They’ll never forget our master,

The man from Cahersiveen.
