Dromid Pearses
Dromid has been a rich hunting ground for the Binneas Project with many dozens of songs in both the Irish and English language being donated to the Collection. The song below is a typical example of a football song composed about a particular game. The composer highlights the skill, athleticism and overall ability of the team players and their positions on the field. These compositions give us a valuable grassroots historical insight into the sporting history of the area. This genre of the song writing tradition still flourishes in the area and in particular to Dromid Pearses due to the compositions of Padraig O’Connell, Cappanagrown.
Piarsaigh na Dromoda (Dromid Pearses) was formed by Sean 'Hard' Curran in 1946 and have a football field at Inchinatinny, Mastergeehy .
Air: The rising of the moon
They’re saying it in the country; you’ll hear it in the town,
The Pearses now are coming up, the others going down.
I saw their game with Waterville, and found it well worthwhile,
To see the Dromid Pearses display their dashing style.
Our goalie Brendan Sullivan each rasping shot did hold,
And lashed them up the middle to save the green and gold.
Dan Connell, a young defender was starring on the right,
He holds his own, true manfully in every thrilling fight.
The peerless Willie Keating at fullback he was grand,
He bravely held the Sergeant and made a gallant stand.
Owen White was safe at left-full, he proved a stonewall back,
By holding scoreless thru’ the hour their stalwart, Danny Mack.
Tim Sugrue was at right-half, he surely is a flier,
He thrilled us all that evening as he mastered star Dwyer.
Our centre-half Dan Courtney, I will not tell a lie,
He dealt quite well with Reidy, that quiet and gentle boy.
The dashing Paddy Curran at left-back did shine,
He was the hardest worker in Pearses great back line.
At centre-field Ger Sullivan was a hero of the game,
With his brilliant first-time pulling, he’s on the road to fame.
Sean Curran our Kerry junior, is a tireless midfield star,
And with the Dromid Pearses we hope he will go far.
Now as our left-wingers, the Courtney brothers shine,
We proudly hail young Michael, he’s a second Tadhgie Lyne.
Next we’ve got Fitzgerald, Sullivan and Murphys; two,
These are all just young lads and sportsmen thru’ and thru’.
Next year we’ll all be stronger, more eager for the fray,
And though they pick All-Ireland, there will be no replay.
